A Quick Drive-By

I’ve been busy as hell lately, but stopped in for a quick post.

I’ve been on the fence on whether or not Democrats should participate in the BENGHAZI! select committee. I think Pelosi did the right thing by insisting the committee be equally divided between Democrats and Republicans. As expected, the Republicans refused since that would prevent them from using the committee to conduct Anti-Clinton campaign activities. Now, Pelosi should refuse to provide any Democrats for the committee and let it be shown for the shameless, partisan PR stunt that it is.

Your thoughts or anything else you want to chat about in the comments.

This post (which is just Roy Edroso flogging his Village Voice column) had comment on the wingnuts’ BENGHAZIII!!!! derangement that I rather enjoyed:

I’ve never heard the Benghazi Brigade give a coherent explanation as to the what or the why, they just whisper darkly and hope the audience makes the connection. They do what, in the colorful parlance of digital space, is known as “JAQing off.” Except it doesn’t seen like an act. If it were, they would have given up after the three hundredth round failed to budge the public at all. It seems like they believe there’s something genuine sinister at play, and just assume that it’s obvious to everyone. It’s a large group of people exhibiting the kind of leaps in logic that one normally only sees in someone in the midst of a psychotic break.

I’ve heard plenty of theories as to why the conservative movement has Benghazi on the brain, and some of them make a lot of sense. But I don’t think there is any sense here. Looking for logic is missing the point. This is like some kind of totem for them, some magical words that can dispel the liberal menace and the black tyrant that symbolizes it. But why latch on to this, of all things? It wasn’t the first, the last, or the biggest. It’s totally random, the hobby horse of a misanthropic crank who never feels the need to explain anything to anyone.

The BENGHAZI! kabuki was of to a riotous start today. First, Boehner proclaimed that it was a real investigation and not political, then Gowdy swore Republicans would not be using it for fundraising, and then the NRCC puts up a website soliciting political donations based on what? BENGHAZI! of course. The Democrats just need to get out of the Republicans’ way on this one.

I agree that Democrats need to stay as far away from this as possible. Any Democrats that participate in this are just giving it legitimacy.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out now that Senate Republicans have said they want it to be a Joint committee with evenly divided membership. Boehner and Gowdy will refuse, just adding more evidence that it is only intended to be the political circus that Boehner claimed it wouldn’t be.
